UT Student Gov. & Student Body officially endorse — getting out of Austin’s Coal Plant

Via Eva Hernandez, Sierra Club: “Good news–yesterday UT’s SGA voted and the student body endorsed AE divesting from coal! The students will formally make this announcement, Thurs. Oct 8, 11 am, at a press conference on the steps of City Hall.”

Info on the press conference:

On October 8th, 2009, students from across the city of Austin will come together in support of Austin moving forward in the direction of clean, renewable energy. University Democrats from the University of Texas, Campus Democrats from St. Edward’s University, and student Sierra Club members, among others, will be holding a press conference at 11:00 a.m. on October 8th, 2009 on the steps of Austin City Hall to announce their support for a clean energy future for Austin. Students will also be announcing an exciting new development: The Student Government of the University of Texas has officially endorsed the call by environmental groups and citizens from across the city to divest from the Fayette Coal Plant and invest more in renewable energy sources.

Featured speakers include Brittany Dawn McAllister, Austin Student Outreach Director for the Sierra Club, Lone Star Chapter, Andy Jones, Vice-President of University Democrats and President of Texas College Democrats, and Jimmy Talarico, UT Student Government University-Wide Representative and Legislative Policy Committee Vice-Chair.

Students will speak to points featured in Austin Energy’s PACE proposals and proposals submitted by a coalition of partners including the Sierra Club, Public Citizen, Environment Texas, and Power Smack. Students will discuss how divesting from the Fayette Coal Plant benefits students and the community at large.

After the press conference, students will divide up into the teams and into the Mayor’s office and Council members’ offices, asking them to keep the interests of students in mind when voting on Austin Energy’s future.

These students are excited to participate in advancing the mission of students, environmentalists, and millions of people across the nation in moving our energy sector to clean, renewable energy.
