Return of El Niño

The NOAA has announced that El Niño is returning to the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which means higher than normal ocean surface temperatures and the possibility of a wet fall for Austin.

Susan Vessell of KEYE news recently posted a summary of the phenomenon and it’s implications on the Texas climate that’s worth the read.

With this extreme drought, the thought of more regular rainfall get’s me giddy. Visions of tomatoes and winter squash dance in my head. But we all know Central Texas weather can’t be that easy, so Susan throws this prediction at us:

“I truly believe we are set up for one of the biggest flooding events ever to occur.”

Great. Another huge rainy season, like we had a couple of years ago, could be just as hard on our plants by water-logging their dry roots. Everyone hope for something in between.
