One of the worst droughts in history

Dear Austin EcoNetwork community,

You already know — it’s hot and dry outside.

It’s so dry that central Texas is suffering from one of the worst droughts in history. Water levels at Lake Travis and spring flows to Barton Springs have fallen to alarming levels. And swimming in the greenbelt hasn’t been possible in a really long time — my toddler has yet to experience the joy of Campbell’s Hole or Twin Falls on Barton Creek.

We can’t make it rain, but we can use the water we do have more efficiently. Despite its green reputation, the city of Austin wastes too much water — using 26 percent more water per capita than recommended by the state.

Please click here to e-mail the Austin City Council and urge them to get serious about water conservation. We need to protect our water resources now and for the future.

There are many easy ways we can save water, such as replacing old shower heads and toilets with new models that use less water, capturing rainwater off roofs for use in gardens and using drought-resistant plants in landscaping.

By increasing funding and standards for water conservation, we can guarantee our water supply for the future. We can help save consumers money by avoiding the need to build the expensive new water treatment plant proposed by the Austin Water Utility.

Please e-mail the Austin City Council and urge them to get serious about water conservation.
