Mary Mary, quite contrary how does your jewelry grow?

I recently came across these very interesting jewelry designs by Icelandic designer Hafsteinn Juliusson.  These stainless steel rings are actually tiny planters for itty bitty patches of Icelandic moss.  The line of rings are pretty much all the same aside from their size.  These eco bling rings come in one, two, three, and four finger styles.

I was surprised to learn that these rings were stainless steel, as opposed to sterling silver considering their high price (starting at $790).  One unanswered question about these adornments that I think is important to consider is the manner in which the moss is harvested.  Where does it come from, and what impact does its removal have on the environment? I haven’t found any information about this, but I am aware that some lichens and mosses grow extremely slowly over the course of hundreds, even thousands of years.

I think it is a cool idea that has potential, perhaps with a different type of plant.  I like the idea of having a tiny little planter resting on your finger.
