Local Religious Groups plan big for Earth Day

Austin’s Interfaith Environmental Network is planning one of the world’s-first interfaith Earth Day worship services. Meanwhile, historic First Baptist Church is preparing for a month of creation, education, and stewardship activities.

The Interfaith Environmental Network, launched just 5 months ago, will be holding its Earth Day service at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Sunday April 25. The event, "Green By Faith," will feature Jewish, Christian, and Muslim clergy in collaborative worship from 2 to 3pm. The service will be immediately followed by an information fair and social hour, 3 to 5pm.

First Baptist Church, founded in downtown Austin July of 1847, will be promoting educational opportunities both Wednesdays and Sundays from April 7 through May 2. First Baptist’s environmental events include:

  • The Journey of Environmental Stewardship, presented by eco-educator Chris Searles, with guests Rev. Leigh Jackson and Rev. Don Searles. Sundays: April 11, 18, 25 & May 2 (twice daily, 9:30am & 2:00pm).
  • A special creation care worship service led by Rev. Roger Paynter, Sunday May 2nd (11 am).
  • A series of educational shorts, presented by local environmental experts and Rev. Ann Pittman, Wednesdays: April 7, 14, 21, and 28 (6pm).

All activities are free and open to the public.
