03 Oct Growing Together and Cultivating Community at the Water Wise Permablitz

The GrowinTogether Afternoon Enrichment Program is excited to be leading kids activities at the upcoming Water Wise Permablitz. At this unique event, people from the community of all ages will come together to transform a residential property in the Cherrywood neighborhood into a water-saving food-producing ecotopia. Austinites will have the opportunity to learn water conservation techniques through hands-on sustainability projects, transforming this property while educating and inspiring others to do the same.

Most importantly, we will be doing it together in a fun, social, and connected environment. The event is sponsored by the local group Community Cultivators, a named perfectly to reflect their value that sustainability isn’t just about organic gardens and solar power, but about uniting with our neighbors to live in harmony with each other and the planet.  

These are also the values of GrowinTogether. In our daily afterschool program, we share values of beauty and sustainability with kids aged 5-14 through hands-on projects led by community members.  We bring together kids from different ages and backgrounds to collectively decide, plan and create group projects that incorporate the creative arts, environmental sustainability, teambuilding, and health.  We are excited to do this at the Water Wise Permablitz, where kids will not be cordoned off in some separate “childcare” area, but integrated into all the projects in safe, age-appropriate ways. Kids will have the choice to participate in the larger projects like digging berms and swales, or simpler projects like making seed start pots from recycled plastic bottles.

We’re excited to see the community come together around such a fun and valuable event, and together we will build a beautiful, sustainable world.
