Edible Austin’s Eat Drink Local Week 2013

As winter rolls around, it's easy to forget about the abundance of seasonal, local foods that can be incorporated into our meals. During Eat Drink Local Week 2013, Edible Austin encourages and challenges Austin to shop at neighborhood farmers' markets, gather with friends and family over seasonal food, and eat at restaurants which source ingredients from area farms and ranches.

During the week, Edible Austin will present three signature events, which can further your urban agriculture education and encourage cooking with local produce.

On Sunday, December 8, join us for A Night with Will Allen at the Stateside at the Paramount. Will believes in fresh food accessibility for all people, and has promoted this idea through his non-profit, Growing Power. At Growing Power, Will teaches community members to become urban farmers in order to secure a source of good food without political or economic forces. After the talk, Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune will moderate a panel discussion on sustainable agriculture. Edible Austin will host a farmers market in the lobby following the talk and panel. Tickets are $35 or $100 VIP which includes a reception with Will Allen and chef-prepared tastings.

On Tuesday, December 10, gather with friends for A Winter Harvest Dinner Party at the Palm Door. This 8-course, family-style meal presented by Bread & Circus Supper Club and Pink Avocado Catering celebrates seasonal ingredients in a communal setting. Some of the delectable items on the menu include Wild Mushroom Bread Pudding, Maple Bacon Roasted Wild Boar and Cranberry Lavender Tarts. Bread & Circus always highlights the season's best flavors from local farmers, and will be sourcing from this menu from Johnson's Backyard Garden, Hardie's, and Countryside Farm. Tickets for the affair are $65.

Toward the end of the week, on Thursday, December 12, learn about what a city would look like if its entire population could be fed by healthy, organic food at An Advanced Screening of Farm-City, State at the Blanton Museum of Art. David Barrow directed this documentary in Austin and will lead an audience Q&A with Stephanie Scherzer from Rain Lily Farm and Farmhouse Delivery after the film. GMO-free popcorn from Greenling will be handed out for a movie treat and attendees will receive a free pass to visit the Blanton Museum of Art. Admission is free but RSVP is required.
