Connecting the Climate Dots – Local Action

Saturday, May 5, 2012 is Climate Impact Day.

Across the planet now we see more floods, droughts, and storms that are linked to global climate disruption. In Texas last year, we all lived the terror of our communities burning during the record-busting drought. We’re already witnessing climate change unlike anything we have seen before…the good news is that there is still is time to do something about it.

It is time to raise awareness and help people connect the dots between climate change and extreme weather. Here in Texas and across the globe. Scientists say there is still time to slow climate change and bring CO2 down from 392 parts per million (ppm) to 350 ppm, resulting in slowing melting icebergs and fewer extreme weather events.

We’re asking you to help us connect the dots by making and submitting climate impact and climate commitment photos with a dot in them.

1. Make your dot: print, make, sew, cut, bake, or dance a dot to have in your photo. No limits…have fun! Or you can print a climate dot at: http://www.climatedots.org/printables/impact-dots/

2. Connect your dot: Join us at any of the locations / times below to join a photo with our GIANT dot.
  • 8:00-9:30 – Auditorium Shores
  • 10:00-11:00 – Mopac Footbridge (hike and bike trail)
  • 11-12:00 – Republic Square Park Farmers Market
  • 12:00-1:00 – Twin Oaks Library (Bike in Book Swap)

If you can’t make it out, take your own photo with evidence of climate change or something you are doing to decrease carbon emissions. In your photo, Make it personal-show us what are you doing to climate change and lessening climate change or how you feel about climate change, what you want to protect from climate change.

Lessening your impact ideas include photos with you gardening, recycling, solar/ wind power, repurposing, reusing, bike riding, an electric car, light rail, walking, volunteering, and more extreme weather ideas include photos with drought stricken dead tree or bush, air conditioning or water bill last summer, fire charred trees, sunburn, headlines from paper, creek with water/creek run dry, dead wildlife.

3. Share your dot photo: Post to the City of Austin, Office of Sustainability facebook page and make a comment. Tell us why you are motivated to decrease carbon (greenhouse gas emissions), slow climate change, or prepare for climate change at: https://www.facebook.com/austinsustainability or, simply email sustainability@austintexas.gov and tell us why you are motivated to participate in this day of action.

The City of Austin, Office of Sustainability will then take your photo and create our own Climate Impact photo collage to show the world that Austin is serious about action! Once the photo collage is complete, we will send you a link so you may view and share. Feel free to re-post to facebook.
