Hello Zero Wasters!
I’m writing today because Texas Campaign for the Environment needs our help in getting activists into the Dell Shareholders Meeting on Friday.
As many of you know, since last year TCE has been urging Walmart to match their competitors’ programs in electronic waste takeback, to push their suppliers to design less toxic, more recyclable products and to back a strong national policy against the export dumping of electronic waste overseas. This is a vital step to achieve our Zero Waste goals, as e-waste is the fastest growing source of waste in our landfills, and among the most toxic. Walmart coming on board would mean a huge new market force pushing towards our vision, and it would be a huge victory for Zero Waste organizing.
One of the members of Walmart’s Board of Directors—Jim Breyer—also sits on the Dell Board of Directors, and as TCE successfully lobbied Dell to begin comprehensive takeback efforts, he is seen as a crucial potential ally. TCE supporters have written Breyer hundreds of letters at this point, and we intend to address him personally at the Dell Shareholder meeting this Friday. We want to bring a number of our organizers along, but to get into the meeting we need proxies from Dell shareholders. While only one or two of us will speak, the visual of a couple of dozen Zero Waste activists in a crowd of maybe 100 people is expected to have a huge impact.
If you or someone you know is a Dell shareholder, we need your help. You can sign over a proxy to us and give us the power to speak to Mr. Breyer, and to move this campaign towards victory. Please email me back as soon as possible and I will send you a proxy form via email, which you can sign and fax (below) or email back to us. The meeting is on Friday, so we need these in as soon as possible. Alternatively, if you have received the blue tickets for the meeting, you can simply send these over and we will be able to get in. If you are not a Dell shareholder, we encourage you to forward this email to friends, family or colleagues who may be.
Dell has become an ally on our issues because of the organizing work of concerned citizens like you. Getting Walmart on board would be a game changer, offering real solutions for the safe and responsible disposal of these products to virtually everyone in America. Using these connections, getting creative and strategic with our organizing is the way we have moved this far forward, and it is how we will achieve the victories which will get us down to Zero Waste and the victories for our planet, economy and families that entails.
