This presentation will demonstrate a means for understanding everyday challenges facing those disproportionately impacted by extreme climate-induced events, such as heat waves, wildfire smoke, and pluvial flooding. Drawing on cases from Los Angeles, Jackson, MS, and the Portland metropolitan region, the presentation will exhibit the promise in an evidence-based framework that contextualizes the emerging factors that amplify extreme weather events.

This work is rooted in the Sustaining Urban Places Research Lab at Portland State University, which fosters collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement, and stands as a model for advancing a community-centered approach to building resilience and adaptation within small and large communities.
