Austin Bike Summit

November 25 @ 4:20 pm

[UPDATED 4/8/10]

The Austin Bike Summit 2010 is on! April 9-10th

http://lobv.org/summit

The summit is an opportunity for the Austin community to assess what we’ve got, share tools to build upon that, and discuss our common and varied goals.

The summit is co-hosted by the League of Bicycling Voters, Austin Cycling Association, Yellow Bike Project, and Bike Texas. The LOBV is managing the logistics; information is posted here as it comes.

The event begins with a 6pm bike ride from Pfluger Bridge, then a social get-together and some succinct, inspirational speeches on the evening of Friday, April 9th at Bike Texas headquarters, 1902 East 6th Street at Chicon Street. Then, Saturday, April 10th will be all-day beginning at 8:15am, with twelve workshops and forums, and will be located at Yellow Bike Project’s new headquarters, 1216 Webberville Road @ East 12th Street in east Austin.

Attendance will be FREE to attendees, though we encourage everyone to become a member or give donation to at least one of the participating non-profits. We will be providing refreshments and food to make the event seamless.

Most workshops will be presented by local experts, while others will consist of facilitated discussion. Workshops will cover educational programs, such as how to expand after school programs, how to reach out to get more kids biking and walking, and to discuss what is needed.

We’ll also cover promotion, including how we can pool our resources together for promotion as some industries do, bike ambassador programs, and the opportunities of Bike Month.

Advocacy will be discussed for organizational and individual audiences: How do the UTC, ACA, MUTCD, and LCIs fit into one picture and how they can better work together; how to maximize the potential of the “three-legged stool” of advocacy, political, and government; where and how individuals can be most effective when interfacing with government and non-profit entities; and how each of us can better handle the most notorious of one-on-one encounters — those on the road.

We’ll also get a perspective on bicycle facility design in Austin, an overview of the city’s bike program, and what is in the works.

The old and new phenomena of social rides has been helpful in bringing new people into the fold. We’ll have a workshop to discuss the further potential of bicycling as a social phenomenon.

One of the workshops that I’m most looking forward to is a discussion on how we can better incorporate and interface the bicycle “movement” with businesses. There will also be a workshop on bike-related enterprises, both a how-to and a discussion of the importance of such businesses.

We’ll conclude the “work” part of the day with a recap, some goal setting, and making sure each of us gets started on the right foot to make things happen. Then we’ll slip again into the mingling and other informal sharing and conversations with a closing evening social get-together, beginning at 6pm.

Feel welcome to contact me with any questions, ideas for workshops, or to get involved with the planning of the Austin Bike Summit. We look forward to seeing all of you there!
