30 Sep City to Host Free Training to Help Businesses Meet Recycling Requirements
Lunch and Learn Events to Help Make Business Recycling Easier
AUSTIN, TEXAS – More businesses are offering recycling as part of the Universal Recycling Ordinance beginning Oct. 1, 2013. This is the second year of the ordinance that extends recycling requirements to multifamily properties with more than 50 dwelling units and commercial office buildings larger than 75,000 square feet. To help these properties meet the requirements, the City is offering free training sessions for businesses.
The Universal Recycling Ordinance currently requires property owners of large multifamily apartment complexes and commercial office buildings to ensure recycling is available for customers, tenants and employees. This ordinance is part of an ongoing effort to increase the life of local landfills, reduce harmful environmental impacts, boost the local economy and reach our Zero Waste goal to divert 90 percent of materials from landfills by 2040.
“Participation from businesses and apartments is a key component in Austin’s strategy to become a Zero Waste community. Austin Resource Recovery is committed to helping owners and property managers learn about the Universal Recycling Ordinance requirements and cost effectively implement recycling programs,” said Director Bob Gedert, Austin Resource Recovery.
The Universal Recycling Ordinance establishes minimum standards for recycling at commercial properties based on square footage or number of dwelling units. This year, it affects approximately 140,000 households at 680 apartment complexes and thousands of employees in 270 commercial office buildings. Next year, the ordinance will affect additional business types and smaller facilities, including large retail and industrial properties. By 2017, recycling programs will be required at nearly all properties in Austin.
To help businesses learn about the recycling requirements and comply with the ordinance, Austin Resource Recovery is hosting a series of free “Lunch & Learn” training sessions throughout October. Learn more at austinrecycles.com.
