Remember back in May of last year, when we had those two (kind of confusing) propositions about policing on the ballot?
In response to that election (and the high number of other initiatives that have made their way onto the ballot recently) City Council created a Charter Review Commission to look into some proposed changes to the process for getting many of these citizen-led propositions on the ballot. Some ideas they’re considering include:
- Increasing the number of signatures needed
- Making it clear that if two conflicting propositions pass, the one with the most votes will “win”
- Moving most of these kinds of elections to November (when voter turnout tends to be higher)
- Changing the naming of these propositions to cycle through the alphabet, so that every year we don’t just have a bunch of Prop As
Right now, these are all just ideas (each with their own set of pros and cons) and the Charter Review Commission is currently reviewing them before making a list of final recommendations to City Council…. But before that happens, the commission wants to hear from you! They’re hosting a town hall meeting on February 8th at City Hall at 7pm. Attend, learn more, and share your thoughts!
