Local Food – Talk # 2 – Local Food Purveyors
Habitat Suites Hotel – Free & Open to the Public
Presented by Austin Permaculture Guild
Local food makes up less than 15% of our total food- and the average morsel travels 1,500 miles to get to your table. This is a situation that is un-sustainable. Food is dripping with oil from transport, processing, and machine farming; loaded with known and unknown toxins; poisoning the soil with pesticides; hurting our precious farmland; and, putting the profits in the pockets of big, largely uncaring, certainly non-local corporations.
The local food movement in Austin and Central Texas is asking all to join to promote, buy, cook, order, and eat more local food. It's healthier, more nutritious, tastes better, and involves exercise and wellness. Some things I hope we all want. It's also easy! Start to garden, go to farms, buy from local farmers and at local Farmer's Markets. It's important to know about and support local markets financially, politically, and strategically. Publicity, purchasing and eating their good food from local businesses and the local economy.
Part two – Local Food: The Purveyors will feature four local food purveyors:a restaurant, an institutional food service, a Farmer's Market, and a retail market. It's Wednesday night from 7:00 pm – 8:30pm at Habitat Suites Hotel.
Please join us. It's important to know and support our local food markets and restaurants. Please pass this invite on and bring a friend. Learn about what local food can do for you and what you can do for it – buy it, ask for it, talk about it, order it, eat it, and rave about it.
