If you’re passionate about connecting children to nature, another way you can get involved is by becoming an Explore Austin mentor. Explore Austin is a local nonprofit organization that combines the benefits of mentoring and outdoor adventure in a six-year program for underserved youth.

Here’s how it works. Students who join the program go on nine outdoor adventures a year, plus a week-long wilderness trip in the summer. Activities can include anything from rock climbing to canoeing. The idea is to teach students leadership skills, self-confidence, and responsibility through a connection to nature and the outdoors.

But they can’t do any of this without your help. All of these trips are led by volunteer mentors who love helping young people and spending time in the great outdoors. Applications are currently being accepted for Explore Austin’s mentor program. More info>>
