15,000. That’s how many single family homes have earned an Austin Energy Green Building rating since the program launched in 1991.
The Austin Energy Green Building system was one of the first of its kind in the US, helping to inspire a whole host of national standards for green building, including LEED.
Homes that receive an Austin Energy Green building rating are energy and water efficient. They also are constructed using sustainable materials and with a limited amount of waste.
“We are helping raise the standard for homes being built in Austin that are healthier and more comfortable to live in, more energy, water and material-efficient, as well as better for the community and the planet,”said Heidi Kasper (of Austin Energy Green Building) in a press release. “We also want green homes to be accessible and available to everyone.”
With the announcement of this 15,000 home milestone, Austin Energy Green Building hopes to continue expanding its program and ensuring that more and more homes in Austin are built to high environmental standards.
In addition to single family homes, Austin Energy Green Building also rates apartments and condos. So far, more than 34,000 multifamily dwelling units have received one of their ratings, indicating that they were built to high environmental standards.
