The long-anticipated Lone Star rail line, which would connect Georgetown to San Antonio, appears to be struggling. After more than a decade of work and millions of dollars spent, the rail line has suffered several deep blows over the past few months.
In February, Union Pacific said that Lone Star could no longer consider using Union Pacific’s existing track to build the new system on. Since then, Hays and Bexar counties have withdrawn from the project, taking their money with them. As the Austin American-Statesman reports, San Antonio is considering reversing a pledge of $450,000 to the district. Austin, Travis County, and Austin Community College all still remain on the project, but Travis County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty has said that he will push for a withdrawal in the upcoming weeks.
While the Lone Star project avoided a serious funding freeze from the Capitol Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) earlier this week, things are currently not looking good for the project as a whole. More info>>
