Once again, the City of Austin has been recognized for being a leader in green energy. The EPA recently released its annual ranking of top Green Power Partners. The City of Austin is fifth in the nation among local governments that purchase renewable energy. 

Currently, the City of Austin gets 100 percent of its electricity for municipal (city-run) operations from renewable energy. That’s equivalent to the annual electricity use of nearly 30,000 average American homes.

The EPA’s Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that helps advance the green power market and spur its development by encouraging organizations to use green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with electricity use. The partnership currently has more than 1,400 partner organizations (including companies, governments, and universities) voluntarily using billions of kilowatt hours of green power annually. More info>>

If you would like to do your part to support renewable energy in Austin, you can sign up for Austin Energy’s GreenChoice program. GreenChoice subscribers pay less than one cent more per kilowatt hour of energy usage and in exchange, help to support the Texas renewable energy industry. For every GreenChoice subscriber, Austin Energy purchases enough Texas wind power to cover 100 percent of their electricity needs. In 2016 alone, Austin Energy customers purchased more than 719 million kilowatt hours of electricity through GreenChoice.
