09 Aug Recycling Bike Parts: Bicycle Re-Cycle’s Mission
Bicycles are generally made of easily recycled materials, such as metal alloy frames and rubber
wheels. Austin is known for its love of cycling. However, environmental responsibility comes
along with our city’s passion as well. When your bicycle is damaged beyond repair, recycling its
individual pieces still does a greater amount of good then sending it to a landfill.
In February 2009, Jack & Adam’s Bicycles launched a green team: Bicycle Re-Cycle, a
recycling campaign to keep bicycles and everything bicycle-related out of the landfills. You can
be part of it too by tossing your tubes and tires into one of the bins which are available in their
shop. There will be bins for other items as well, including spare parts and clothing. A few other
local shops are providing recycling for tubes and tires with the expansion hopefully down the
road to include other things, such as a whole bike.
Bicycle Re-Cycle’s results: They have collected over 2,000 pounds of tubes and tires since
January 2012, with the participation from: Jack & Adams, The Peddler, OZONE, The Austin
Yellow Bike Project, and Fast Folks.
Starting a recycling program is a great way for cyclists and bike shops to work together in
protecting our environment. Tim Alcala, a green team leader of Bicycle Re-Cycle, encourages
you to get involved! How? Ask for a recycling program to your local bike shop and hopefully
over time, all bike shops in Austin will have a program in place. Go further….have a Bike
Drive and a Great Bike Party! Remember there is much to be celebrated—sparing our landfill of
reusable/recyclable materials!
For recycling: Drop off bicycles along with bike parts tubes, tires, bike clothing to Jack &
Adam's where The Green Team Bicycle Re-Cycle is headquartered.
For reuse: Not ready to send your bike or parts to its recycling graveyard quite yet? Don’t
forget about another great program like the Yellow Bike Project that repair bikes and puts them
back out into the community.
