Welcome to The Austin Common’s Living Eulogies project. Over the next several months, we’ll be publishing a series of stories, focused on the ways Austin can better preserve its local creative and small business community.
We’ll be looking at programs and initiatives the city has already tried, assessing how well they’ve worked (or haven’t), and what can be done in the future (especially in a time of tightening city budgets). We’ll also look at examples from across the country, seeing if there are any successful ideas we can borrow and make happen right here in Austin.
The idea behind a living eulogy is to honor someone while they’re still alive.
And that’s what we’ll be doing with this series.
Honoring our local businesses and creative spaces by reporting on ways to keep them right here in Austin, Texas.

What if, instead of only talking about our city’s problems, we started discussing their solutions?
So much of the news is dedicated to the bad. Nearly all of the focus is on what’s going wrong, leaving hardly any time left over to focus on what matters… what to actually do about it.
With this series, we plan on flipping that paradigm on its head.
This is called solutions journalism and the idea is simple – to apply the same rigorous reporting skills we use to uncover our city’s problems to investigate potential solutions to them.
Each year, we hope to pick a new problem facing our city, and report on ways we could work towards solutions. This year’s focus area was actually chosen by you, our readers, so if you’ve got an idea for next year’s topic, be sure to let us know at info@theaustincommon.com
