We did it! The Mayor’s Carbon Reduction Challenge has come to a close. Not only did the community meet the city’s goal of avoiding 50,000 pounds of carbon emissions, but we surpassed it by an additional 30,000 pounds!
As you might remember, the Mayor’s Carbon Reduction Challenge was an initiative spearheaded by Austin Mayor Steve Adler and the city’s Office of Sustainability. During the competition (October 23rd – October 30th) Austinites could download the free Rethink/ app and challenge themselves to take actions to help our environment.
Over the course of the week-long challenge, not only did Austinites manage to reduce carbon emissions, but 5,800 pounds of waste were diverted from the landfill and 170,000 gallons of water were conserved.
Now that’s what we call a job well done 🙂
And remember, just because the challenge is over doesn’t mean that you have to stop using the app or taking action on climate change. So keep carpooling, riding the bus, and shopping local! Everything you do really does add up.
