“It started with a dream that kids could go on field trips again,” said Ryan Spencer, with the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center. That dream is now a reality. This month, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center officially launched its Roadrunner Outdoor Adventure Bus program, designed to make nature-based field trips affordable and accessible to all children.
Here’s how it works. Schools and teachers can now start making reservations to use the bus to connect their students to nature. Teachers at Title 1 schools who want to take their students to Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center will get free transportation for the field trip, along with reduced admission prices ($3/ student) to the preserve. For field trips arranged for all other schools (or to other destinations), the bus will be rented out at-cost, saving a lot of money on what is often the most expensive aspect of a field trip.
