An effort to fund additional bike lanes in Austin hit its first major roadblock earlier this month. Austin’s Bond Oversight Commission voted against sending a recommendation to City Council to consider placing a bike bond on the November ballot.
The failed recommendation called for the funding of 220 miles of protected bike lanes, 50 miles of urban trails and hundreds of miles of missing sidewalks. The recommendation was eventually turned down over commissioners’ fears that the total price tag of $400 million was too high and that it didn’t include any road improvements.
But this doesn’t mean that the effort is over. A revised recommendation is likely to be presented at the Bond Oversight Commission’s next meeting on Wednesday, May 18th from 9:30am to 11:30am. The public is welcome to attend the meeting and give input on the commissioners’ recommendations. More info>>
