02 May Food Waste Prevention – Get Involved
It's live! The talk about Trashing Food that I gave at TEDxYouth@Austin is online now.
I put the script (as planned, not precisely as delivered) into this blog if you want the text.
If you want to get involved locally in the waste prevention and recovery efforts here are two channels:
1) Volunteer for Keep Austin Fed which delivers food from restaurants to shelters and other social service agencies. Just this morning Joseph de Leon let me know "We still need help finding new donors and drop off spots. We also have a need for help outside of food pickups, such as collecting empty egg cartons, helping plant a garden, and help with data entry. Soon, we'll even have tabling opportunities, in which a volunteer can help spread the word about Keep Austin Fed at a festival booth. Even one hour, once per month can be a big help.
To get involved go to their very cool Keep Austin Fed Facebook page. Go ahead and Like them while you are there and send them a message if you want to volunteer.
2) Get involved with Food Shift Austin. Some of us meet weekly to lay the groundwork for this city-wide campaign to shift the awareness and practices around food and getting food to the highest and best use, which is just about anything but the landfill or incinerator.
You can start getting plugged into the dialog by requesting to join the foodsurplus Google Group. Soon we will also have tabling opportunities and ways to help aside from core organizing.
Please share our Food Establishment Survey with all food business owners/managers you know. It should take 10 minutes and will really help us establish a baseline of awareness, practices and receptiveness to various forms of food recovery. Thanks!
