The City of Austin Housing and Planning Department invites the community to participate in the Imagine Austin Speaker Series webinar, Taking the Next Step in Civic Engagement: How to Volunteer to Serve on Local Boards and Commissions, on Wednesday, December 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Click here to register.

People are more passionate than ever to participate in our democratic process, as demonstrated by community members voting in higher numbers, marching in protests, signing petitions, and contacting their local and state representatives to have their voices heard. Another way Austin residents can be a positive change agent in our democracy is by serving as an appointed member of a City of Austin board or commission.

This webinar features Myrna Rios, the Deputy City Clerk, who will discuss how to apply to be appointed to one of the City of Austin’s 70 diverse boards and commissions, qualifications and responsibilities, and conflicts of interest that may arise while serving. Three City of Austin active board and commission members will discuss their experiences, what goes into their decision-making processes, and their interests in serving the community.

The City of Austin Imagine Austin Speaker Series (which is always free) brings in thought leaders and national experts from around the country to speak about issues pertaining to land use, transportation, development, the economy, education, workforce development, the built and natural environment, green infrastructure, social equity, and sustainability to promote and implement Austin’s vision for the future, the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan.
