Dec 7th 7 – 8:30 pm Texas Union Theater A symposium on: Sustainable Architecture, Agriculture, and Social Enterprise in Tropical Latin America Presented by Global Business Brigades UT The symposium will feature six presentations, each lasting about fifteen minutes. Four presenters have experience in architecture, agriculture, and social enterprise in Latin America.
Two others, local specialists in architecture and agriculture, will also offer their perspective. The presenters are as follows, in order of presentations: (6 presentations for 90 minutes total)
Matteo Arnold – President, Aldea Artisans – San Comalapa, Guatemala Matteo, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala speaks about his development aid work in Guatemala and his start-up fair trade company, Aldea Artisans, which utilizes microfinance from the Whole Planet Foundation. > aldeaartisans.com
Mateo Paneitz – Executive Director of Long Way Home – San Comalapa, Guatemala Mr. Paneitz will speak about the Tecnico Maya Vocational school, the current project of his organization. The school will included amenities such as a vocational workshop, internet cafe, and library, in a community without any schools. The school is being constructed out of recycled materials, including thousands of tires, known as "earthship" construction. > longwayhomeinc.org
Dr. Steven Moore – Director of UT’s Graduate program on Sustainable Design, Austin TX Dr. Moore will be offering a constructive critique of the above earthship project. Maggie McCloud – Pres. of Global Business Brigades UT – Panama Maggie will be speaking about the previous and upcoming projects undertaken by her student organization here at UT. Jenny Nazak – Austin Permaculture Guild, Austin TX Jenny, a specialist in a form of integrated organic farming known as "permaculture" will be discussing its core design principles and how they result in a more ecologically efficient farm or garden. Dr. Fernando Lara – Founder, Studio Toró; Professor, UT’s School of Architecture – Brazil Dr. Lara will speak on his socially conscious design non-profit, Studio Toró.
