Slow Food Austin’s Potluck “Eat-In”

November 26 @ 12:20 pm

On Labor Day, people in communities all over the country are gathering for public potlucks to take part in Slow Food USA’s Time for Lunch Campaign. This day of action sends a clear message to Congress: It’s time to provide our children with REAL FOOD in school.

Slow Food Austin has partnered with Rain Lily Farm to host a local potluck eat-in. Come on out and enjoy a meal with community members who want to get REAL FOOD in our schools.

Please bring a dish to share along with your own plates, utensils, beverages and cups.

Every school day, the National School Lunch Program feeds more than 30 million children. But in the last few decades, as costs have risen and budgets have been cut, school cafeterias have struggled to serve students the real food they need. In a time of soaring childhood obesity and diabetes rates, this system gives schools no choice but to feed our children in a way that endangers their health and their ability to learn.

We can do better. By investing in the National School Lunch program, we can fight hunger and obesity with the same meal. We can support local farmers and create jobs in our communities. At a moment when food costs are hitting families the hardest, we can help those who need us most: the 18 million kids whose only guaranteed daily meal is the free or reduced-price lunch they’re served in school.

This fall, the Child Nutrition Act, which funds and sets standards for school lunches across the country, is up for reauthorization. By ensuring a better bill is passed, we can lay a strong foundation for children’s health and take the first step towards a future where every child enjoys real food.

Please join us at the Eat-In to share a meal with friends, learn more about real food in schools, and make your voice heard in our community.
