6:30-7:15 or 7:30 PRESENTATION –

Presented by Austin Group Sierra Club and Citizen’s Climate Lobby

Dan Galpern, of the Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative, will present to the Climate Change Committee an initiative that he and Dr. James E. Hansen began with their letter to President Biden of Jan. 25, 2021 — just four days after the inauguration.

In that letter, which you can read in full at the link below, they urged the President “to make full use of a powerful tool already at your disposal to accelerate the necessary decarbonization of our power, industrial, agricultural, and transportation systems. That is [to] direct EPA to . . . impose a revenue-neutral carbon fee,” via invocation of “the Independent Offices Appropriation Act (IOAA), 31 U.S.C. §9701.”

The implications of this are profound. It means that the Biden Administration can avoid the ongoing Congressional gridlock and take meaningful action before the critical 26th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC meeting (slated for November 1 in Scotland).

Dan, an environmental and climate change attorney who has advised Dr. Hansen on legal and policy matters since 2010, is Founder, General Counsel, and Executive Director of Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative, https://CPRclimate.org. James Hansen is the Director of Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions. https://csas.earth.columbia.edu/ Previously he served, for over 30 years, as Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

With Dr. Hansen as lead signatory, CPR Initiative is now petitioning the President to take this action without delay. Galpern will be with the Committee, via zoom, to discuss the initiative’s significance on Aug. 2, 2021.

From the petition campaign website CPRClimate.org:
Climate Protection & Restoration Initiative, Because Net Zero Will Not Suffice

7:15-8:00 CLIMATE CHANGE COMMITTEE MEETING – Discuss Action Teams and allow people to sign up to continue the work to stop climate change, an imperative if we want our current civilization to survive. We’ve formed Action Teams on Austin Energy, the Permian Pipeline, Rio Grande Valley Support, Carbon Fee & Dividend, People Power, Data Entry, and Presentations and more. We have identified additional action teams we’d like to form, including Transportation, Climate Justice, Partner Organizations, School Education, and Social Media. Whether you have only minutes a month or hours a day, join us to build a mass movement to stop climate change. Or join another group fighting this vital cause.
