March 8th is the annual day of celebration for International Women’s Day. Every year on that date, women around the world observe the day. Early recognition of the day – as National Women’s Day – began more than 100 years ago. In 1908, females marched through the streets of New York City, demanding voting rights and workers’ rights – better pay and shorter hours. This was the New York Garment Workers’ Strike – at the time, led by The Socialist Party of America.
Internationally, the Day got its start two years later in Copenhagen with the International Conference of Working Women, which including representation by 17 countries. In 1975, the United Nations issued the Decade for Women. For much of the world, however, the day is not about celebration, but struggle for recognition of humanity. There are lots of examples of this right here in the U.S.: Over 17 million women live in poverty, more than 60,000 girls and women are trafficked annually across international borders. And 70 percent of women in the world have experienced some form of sexual or other physical violence.
Our show will revolve around women who have taken a strong stances in politics, environmental protections and standing up for women's rights. This week, we'll feature Brigid Shea, a former Austin City Council member and recently elected Democratic nominee for Travis County Commissioner in Precinct 2. Brigid has a proven track record of activism and leadership on crucial public health and safety issues and is seen as a strong force for the environment, children, equality and transparency in government.
We hope you'll tune in this Thursday and look for another guest to be announced very soon.
