“Shades of Green” Environmental Talk Radio on KOOP 91.7 (Austin Energy’s Proposed Natural Gas Plant)

November 25 @ 8:43 am

Basic Info

Date:
November 25, 2024
Time:
8:43 am

Please join co-hosts John Hoffner, Reed Sternberg, & Stacy Guidry on "Shades of Green", Austin's only environmental talk radio program, on KOOP 91.7 FM and streaming live at www.koop.org!

Our guests will be Karen Hadden, Executive Director of the SEED Coalition (Sustainable Energy & Economic Development), Kaiba White with Public Citizen Texas & Solar Austin, and Jere Locke, head of the Texas Drought Project.

Our discussion will focus on Austin's planned shut down of the Fayette coal and Decker gas plants and how we will need to fill a 500 MW gap in our energy needs.

About 50% of all gas in Texas is now fracked gas, meaning about 50% of the future gas Austin receives may be fracked gas, which has serious ramifications around community health, social justice, water use, and land use. Once the gas gets more and more scarce, the price will get much higher. To build Austin Energy's proposed gas plant and run it for 30 years will cost residents about 5B and we will be locked into more fossil fuels for at least another 30 years.

The big question is, "Will we embrace all methods for renewables, energy efficiency, conservation, etc., or build a new 500 MW gas plant on the tax payer dime?

We'll tap into their expertise on climate change issues, water, health and emission impacts in the shale that is being drilled/fracked.
