Every time a resident of Austin turns on the lights or adjusts an air conditioner there's a boiler at the Fayette coal plant that is burning Wyoming coal. For coal-fired electricity Austin pays a lot each year — $100 million annually for train loads of coal, over 5 billion gallons of Colorado River water for plant operations, a deadly legacy for the future in 11 million metric tons of CO2, and many public health impacts today because of mercury, ozone, soot, heavy metals, and other toxic pollutants. These costs are unacceptable for a globally recognized green city. Come to the first summer Rally for Renewables of 2013 to retire the Fayette Power Plant as central Texans join together to urge the city council to make good on it's pledge to move Austin Beyond Coal. What: A public rally for more clean energy and no more coal in Austin Sponsor: Sierra Club's local Austin's Beyond Coal team When: Thursday, June 20th, 5:00 – 6:00 Where: Austin City Hall Why: It is 2013 and it's time for Austin to kick coal. AND ALSO: You are also welcome to attend city council citizen communications on the 20th at noon to show silent support for Austin citizens speaking on this issue. For more information about the rally on the 20th contact Lydia Avila – lydia.avila@sierraclub.org
