Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.

We’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Origins of a Green Identity: Exploring Austin’s Conservation Pioneers, with Karen Kocher.

***NOTE***: During our meeting, besides using Zoom, you will also need to use the OVEE website. The feature film (1 hour long) will be played on OVEE, starting exactly at 7:15pm: https://ovee.itvs.org/screenings/go9sg . We recommend that you test this website BEFORE the meeting and RSVP there also.

Karen Kocher is an Austin-based media producer and Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Radio-TV-Film at the University of Texas at Austin where she has taught since 1998. Most recently she completed an hour-long documentary, Origins of a Green Identity, which explores Austin’s conservation pioneers. Her exhibit, Barton Creek Time Stream 50+ years of stewardship is mounted at the Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center at Barton Springs. Over 30,000 viewers have watched her series Living Springs on PBS, exploring the history, science and culture of Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer.

Ms. Kocher’s other work includes, Austin Past and Present, a multimedia documentary about the history of Austin that is installed in kiosks in public buildings, on computers in local libraries, and integrated into the social studies curriculum throughout the Austin Independent School District. The video portions of the project aired on PBS in a feature length documentary format that was nominated for a Lonestar Emmy in the historical documentary category.

In conjunction with The Texas Environmental Center, Kocher worked as an instructional designer and associate producer on Barton Springs Interactive, a CD-ROM based documentary about the history, culture and science of Barton Springs in Austin, Texas. Kocher has also worked on nationally broadcast PBS documentaries including the award-winning series, Chicano!: a History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, and Songs of the Homeland, a documentary about the history of Tex-Mex music.

The URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. If you are new to Zoom, tutorials are available on-line – example https://www.youtube.com/embed/hIkCmbvAHQQ . Using your camera and microphone is optional for the meeting.
