Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.

We’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Our featured program is: Drawn from Nature: Art and the Environment by Margie Crisp and Bill Montgomery

Margie Crisp and her husband William B. Montgomery, both artists who live in Elgin, Texas, explore the natural environment as source, inspiration, and motivation for their creations. Each artist will give a short presentation tracing the evolution of their work and careers, then will be available for questions about their creative processes, their visions of the natural world, and how to use those inspirations to stay energized in the midst of modern environmental turmoil.

Margie Crisp is a naturalist, writer and nationally exhibited artist. River of Contrasts: The Texas Colorado (Texas A&M University Press, 2012), written and illustrated by Crisp, received the 2013 Texas Institute of Letter’s Award for Best Book of Non-Fiction and the 2012 Award for Best Illustrated Book on Texas History and Culture, presented by the Texas State Historical Association. She was the Texas Book Festival poster artist in 2012. The Nueces River: Rio Escondido (Texas A&M University Press, 2017), also an award-winner, was illustrated by her husband, artist William B. Montgomery. Crisp has a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin. She is currently at work on a book about hunting and conservation.

William B. Montgomery was born and raised in Tyler, Texas and studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and The University of New Mexico. While studying at the Academia di Belle Arti de Perugia in Italy, he developed an interest in classical European painting which had a major influence on both his painting technique as well as his approach to subject matter. A life long fascination with nature is a continuing influence, and his current work explores animals and their environments, particularly their convergence with civilization. His scientifically precise etchings of snakes have appeared on the covers of a number of important herpetology books. Montgomery recently completed a series of paintings about the Nueces River of Texas, as part of a collaboration with his wife, Margie Crisp.
