Basic Info

Date:
November 26, 2024
Time:

ESI is teaming up with SXSW Eco for this special edition of Hot Science – Cool Talks. As with all Hot Science – Cool Talks, this will be a FREE event for the general public. No badges or passes are required. 5:45-7:00 pm Interactive Fair, 7:00-8:15 pm Talk.

The theme is “Extreme Weather & Uncertainty in Forecasting.” Kevin Kloesel is a Texas Ex and Director of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, working right in the heart of Tornado Alley. He will talk about the science behind extreme weather events such as tornadoes and superstorms, and how meteorologists deal with uncertainty in their forecasts. His talk will include demonstrations of extreme weather phenomena, and comparisons between shooting three-point baskets and climate change. Among many weather and climate-related activities, you will get to make tiny rain clouds, acid rain, and lightning in a bottle. Erupt snow for an avalanche. Play with a Van de Graaff generator and a tornado machine. Learn about the invisible atmosphere and the power of air!
