Grass Seeding on Water Quality Protection Lands

September 30 @ 9:27 am

Want to learn about grasses and seeding? Register here: www.austintexas.gov/wildlandevents
Take part in a a hike across the Water Quality Protection Lands and help reseed an area with native grasses.

The city performed a 500 acre prescribed burn in an area in order to restore the native savanna vegetation by reducing woody plant cover and increasing grass cover. City staff are using a seed drill to plant grass seed over much of the area, but some of it is too brushy or rocky to effectively use machinery. Volunteers will be sowing seed in these rocky and brushy areas.

Activity Details: Volunteers will meet at the gate on FM 967 just west of Buda. They will carry 5 gallon buckets with grass seed and spread them by hand in designated areas.
Clothing Required: Participants must wear appropriate footwear for hiking on rugged terrain, ankle support is vital. Long-sleeved shirts, lightweight in warm weather, are recommended but not required for sun protection and from potential scratches when walking near vines. It is also recommended that participants wear bandanas across nose and mouth while spreading seed, if prone to allergies.

Participants Need to Bring: water bottle that will last them through the morning
