“Little Herds & Insects as a Resource: In Our Food, Our Feed And Our Soil” presented by Robert Nathan Allen
Robert Nathan Allen founded Little Herds, an educational nonprofit in Austin, in June of 2013. Since then he’s worked to grow the idea of using insects as a food or feed source for their nutritional content and resource efficiency. He also advocates for other ways to use insects as a resource rather than a pest, including industrial and agricultural uses, both on a commercial scale and the individual home level. He’ll be sharing the possibilities of incorporating insects into our diets or our gardens in beneficial ways, including the use of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as a way to up-cycle food waste into animal feed and high quality fertilizers or mealworm micro-farms as a way to transform food waste into food. And he may bring us cricket samples to try!
