Austin Resource Recovery presents Fix-It at Home!, an interactive, online workshop series aimed at teaching Austinites repair and maintenance skills from home. Classes range from learning sewing basics and ‘patching’ up clothes, to fixing recreational equipment and household appliances. You’ll meet and learn from a local expert who will instruct you and other Austinites during the class.

Do you have a sewing machine sitting on the shelf that you’ve always wondered how to use, but weren’t sure where to start? If so, this workshop is for you! Our instructor will help you get familiar with a sewing machine’s parts and guide you through threading and cleaning the machine to make sure it stays in good condition. These techniques will equip you with skills for your own mending endeavors, so you can repair that rip in your jeans or hole in your favorite shirt.

Class size is limited. If you are unable to attend, please remove your registration. Class participants that live in the Austin-area will be given priority.

Materials Needed

  • Sewing machine (in this class we will be learning how to thread sewing machines with manual bobbins and drop-in bobbins)
  • Thread
  • Sewing needle (your machine should come equipped with one)
  • Small scrap of fabric

Class Content

  • Understanding the parts of a sewing machine
  • Threading the top thread
  • Threading the bobbin and needle
  • Addressing common sewing machine problems
  • Cleaning your machine

Safety Guidelines: This class is recommended for ages 10 and up. Parental supervision is recommended for those under 16.

Meet the Instructor! Corinne Pierce was born and raised in Austin and teaches first grade in Round Rock ISD. She’s been sewing since she was 9 and enjoys teaching others how to sew.

Technology: This workshop will be hosted on an online platform called WebEx. This may require downloading an application on your computer or phone. The ability to share your camera is encouraged, though is not required to participate. A link will be provided before the workshop.
