Join us this month on Earth Day for our monthly Back to the Land Work Day out at Circle Acres from 10AM to 1PM. For those of you who are not familiar, Circle Acres is a 10 acre retired landfill in the East Austin neighborhood of Montopolis that Ecology Action is turning into a nature preserve and Green Infrastructure Demonstration site. One of the most significant features of the property is that it is home to a large wetland that currently acts as a natural buffer against potentially harmful litter and contamination in storm-water runoff between the neighborhood and the Lower Colorado River. Our task, and challenge, is to make sure that wetland stays healthy and clean to continue serving such an important ecological function. Back to the Land Work Days will involve helping us remove litter after major storm events, maintain walking trails and make green infrastructure improvements to storm-water access points like culverts and tributary breaches. Back to the Land Work Days are also an exciting way to get involved with a brand new conservation project from the ground up. We will provide work gloves, water and any necessary tools but please wear sturdy closed toe shoes and dress for the weather. We also invite everyone to bring a lunch and something to share for a little potluck after we work. Take advantage of already being in the great outdoors and hang out with us while we talk about the project’s history and our exciting plans for the future. Circle Acres is located at:
420 Kemp StreetAustin, TX 78741
Look for the white mailbox with an Ecology Action logo on it. You can either park on the street and walk down the dirt road or drive down the road (carefully) and park on the right shoulder near the property’s main gate. Remember, Back to the Land Word Days are every third Saturday of the month so mark your calendars! For more information or if you have any questions about Back to the Land Work Days or the Circle Acres project in general, please feel free to email us at joaquin@ecology-action.org. We look forward to seeing everyone out there!
