A beekeeping class– just for kids! In this class, kids (recommended ages 7-16) will learn about the important role honey bees play in our food system and how they go about making what we all love so much-honey! We will learn about the three different castes of honey bees and the important role each plays in the hive. We will discuss the development cycle from the time a queen lays an egg until a new adult bee emerges, and even get to hold a bit of wax comb produced by honey bees. Best yet, after our introduction to the bees, the beekeepers-in-training will suit up and get to explore a real life hive, putting their new education to test by looking for the queen bee and spotting the three developmental stages of honey bees. We will remove some honey comb and get to taste honey straight from the hive! Very limited space, so register early. Mikaila Ulmer of Me & the Bees will begin the class with an inspirational presentation about beekeeping as a youngster and the importance of pollinators. She will also have her famous honey-sweetened lemonade to sample.
