Climate Wise Women is a global initiative to promote women’s leadership on climate change and to give a human face and voice to this complex issue.
Our Climate Wise Women speaking events present the stories of women leaders from regions affected by climate change in their own voices. We invite local guests to comment and respond with locally relevant issues and connections in a panel discussion format. We celebrate women’s leadership and provide a springboard for collaboration and mutual support.
The Climate Wise Women project is the brainchild of Tracy Mann, a New York-based veteran music business public relations professional who has worked with artists such as Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, Gilberto Gil and Bebel Gilberto. Mann also books high-level speakers and artists for the annual SXSW Conferences and Festivals in Austin, TX. She is the creator of the September 23, 2009 program ‘Global Women Take Action on Climate Change’ and co-produced the subsequent Copenhagen event.
In April 2010, with major financial support from Realizing Rights, Mary Robinson, Heather Grady, and SXSW Conferences & Festivals, Mann launched the Climate Wise Women tour in North America with Constance Okollet, Eastern Uganda; Sharon Hanshaw, Biloxi, MS; Ulamila Kurai Wragg, Cook Islands; and Ursula Rakova, Carteret Islands. Constance, Sharon, Ulamila and Ursula (via video clip) took the continent by storm, engaging local activists, policy-makers and audiences in constructive conversations at 11 colleges and universities over 20 days.
