NASA's James Hansen, a leading climate scientist and advocate, has repeatedly stated that the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline will be "game over" for the fight against climate change!
It's up to President Obama whether or not to approve the pipeline's permit. He doesn't need Congressional approval – all he has to do is withhold his signature and deny the pipeline's permit.
You're invited to make your voice heard and attend the official public hearing on the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The event will take place in Austin on Wednesday, September 28 at the LBJ Auditorium.
Each citizen is allowed to speak for 3 minutes, and the Sierra Club and Public Citizen will provide snacks and refreshments for our supporters.
RSVP on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/nLQx13
Press Conference will be held at 11:30am
"No Hope bike ride" outside of the hearing and a Grassroots Rally from 6:00pm – 10:30pm.
BACKGROUND INFO:
TransCanada wants to build the largest tar sands pipeline ever, right through America's heartland. The production of tar sands oil generates 3x as many greenhouse gases as the production of conventional crude. This pollution, along with the ecological destruction of the Boreal Forest in Canada that this production causes, must be considered in the Environmental Impact Statement the Department of State is using to determine the project's environmental footprint.
The State Department should take a hard look at the real impacts of this project, and deny TransCanada the Presidential Permit. Deepening our reliance on the dirtiest oil on earth is simply not in our national interest.
