As the Purple Martin numbers start to dwindle, the Chimney Swift numbers start increasing. For several years now, we have participated in A Swift Night Out! Chimney Swift surveys in August and September. We are participating in the surveys again this summer, but in addition to the surveys, we have added a couple of Chimney Swift parties to our field trip schedule. These are similiar to the Purple Martin parties at Highland Mall, and the main focus will be to enjoy the show as the swifts come in to roost. Counting is not required. Birders and non-birders will be entertained by the show, so bring your family, friends and neighbors and join us for an evening of urban birding and socializing with birding friends. Lawn chairs and binoculars are recommended. The location for this party is Brentwood Elementary School at 6700 Arroyo Seco. We will be monitoring the swift activity at this site the week before the party, and if the swifts aren’t there, we’ll move to another location. So register and watch for an email a few days before the event to confirm the location. If you have questions, contact Shelia Hargis at Shelia.hargis@gmail.com or 512-294-0272.
