Austin Organic Gardeners meet the 2nd Monday of every month at the Zilker Garden Center. Join us for our November meeting with Rey Salazar, a Lipan Apache from Corpus Christi speaking on the native approach to gardening. Rey is the owner and care taker of Xochicalli Gardens, a family farm which raises organically grown fruits and vegetables sold at farmers’ markets and is the former agriculturalist of the Lipan Apache Band of Texas. Rey has worked in agriculture most of his life starting as a migrant worker and was harvesting at the age of 12 between school semesters.
About Austin Organic Gardeners:
Monthly meetings are held the second Monday of each month (except December) at the Zilker Botanical Gardens at 6:30 P.M. We have great speakers each month and visitors are welcome!
Since 1945, our members have shared information about successfully raising vegetables and ornamentals without using harsh fertilizers that harm the soil and toxic pesticides that disturb the ecological balance.
The club’s philosophy is that human and animal health depends on the health of the soil that produces their food. Healthy soil, which is rich in organic matter, abounds with organisms that convert minerals in the soil into forms plants can use. The well-nourished plants growing in these soils are better able to defend themselves against attacks from insects, diseases, and other pests.
