Help us celebrate trees as part of Austin’s 20th annual Arbor Day! This year we’re kicking off our local tree planting season (October through March) with lots of fun activities that celebrate the Austin community’s deep, abiding love of trees. Plus, don't miss the official recognition of Austin’s 2011 Tree of the Year and Community tree winners.
Visit the Arbor Day website or Tree of the Year website for more information.
Here's the full schedule:
9:00 am – Spread the Love and Spread Some Mulch. Come on out and help mulch trees in Zilker Park. Volunteers should sign up on the Austin Parks Foundation website.
11:00 am – Celebrate with us! Austin is celebrating its 20th Arbor Day and the recognition of this year's Tree of the Year and Community Tree. This year’s Tree of the Year, a native pecan tree, witnessed much of Austin’s history throughout it’s long life near Barton Springs. The species, the state tree of Texas, has magnificent branches reaching over 100 feet and invites the community to gather, relax and play. This tree provides sustenance to its visitors as well as untold generations of new pecan trees to sustain our urban forest.
11:30 am – Come out and engage in fun tree-related activities.
1:00 pm – Leaf for a Leaf, a program for kids supporting reading and trees. Arbor Day continues the celebration down the road at Twin Oaks Library at 1800 South 5th Street.
