ATXEJ August Meeting: Border Wall, Gentrification, and Climate Change

August 6, 2017 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) –

General meeting for ATXEJ/Austin Environmental Justice Team. We’ll give updates on climate justice & gentrification resistance, with some time for groups to break out. Anyone is welcome. Food will be provided but folks are always welcome to bring a dish and non-alcoholic beverage to share.

We’ll have a brief update on the upcoming mobilization to South Texas to stand against the coming construction of the Border Wall through the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge. Follow Save the Mission! Save the River! Resist the Wall! for more details and sign the petition against the wall athttp://bit.ly/NoBorderWall

The ATXEJ Climate Justice working group is mobilizing support for the August 10th People’s Hearing for Carbon-Free Austin at City Hall to call on city council to move toward a carbon free energy grid by 2030 and to develop more equitable & just local clean energy programs.

Two gentrification resistance teams (Springdale-Airport and Montopolis) are actively working toward community-led neighborhood resiliency & revitalization in East Austin. in the Springdale-Airport neighborhood, members of “S.A.N.A.” Springdale-Airport Neigborhood Association are organizing for the completion of the La Loma Trail w/ safe routes to school for area students, and are calling for the restoration of the Red Bluff vista and its transformation into a community-managed nature preserve.

In Montopolis, allies & activists are organizing alongside longtime neighbors & former students of the Montopolis School for Negro Children in an effort to stop developer Austin Stowell’s plans to turn the historic Montopolis School building & surrounding landscape into a commercial mixed use project. More info at Save Montopolis! Fight Erasure & Gentrification. This will also connect with ongoing work to democratize the CodeNext process and organizing to bring more equity & justice into Austin’s next land use policy rewrite.

Come hear updates and break into working groups to learn how you can get more involved.
