Every city has a vibe. A scene. A look.
A sense of place that leaves you with a certain feeling that makes you want to come back for
more. Learn more. Discover more. Do more. See more. AND if it does – often – that more is its
culture which we know public art can play a pivotal role.
Public Art in a city becomes a collective experiential language. Often physical and visual but
increasingly multi-sensorial; the aesthetics of which create memories and increase one’s desire
to be there. To return for more.
Establishing a sense of a place – when thoughtfully considered through public art – distinguishes
neighborhoods and becomes enhanced attractions to business districts. Housed within
corporate and public facilities, integrated among streetscapes and placed throughout our parks
and trails; public art can shape the aesthetics of a place by imparting indelible and unforgettable
impressions.
A Sense of Place Public Art Conversation offers an opportunity to re-imagine how art in public
places impacts the built environment. Topics will focus on ideas of impact, the sensibilities of
site-specific and site-responsive artworks, permanence and the healing aspects of being in
nature with art.
