[Hike] Saturday, July 11th at 9am the Sierra Club is hosting a hike at La Loma in east Austin. In recent years, La Loma has suffered from a serious dumping problem that community members are now working hard to fix. Anyone wanting to learn more about the history of La Loma and the environmental justice issues connected to it should join in on this hike. Bat Conservation International is giving a free lecture on Saturday.[Bat Talk] Saturday, July 11th from 10am to noon Bat Conservation International is giving a free lecture on bats at the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. Attendees will learn more about the 1300 bat species worldwide and discover the many ways in which bats benefit humans in industries as diverse as agriculture, forestry, tourism, and medicine. The Rally for Our Rivers is on Saturday.[Rally] Saturday, July 11th at 11am Environment Texas, the Clean Water Fund, and Hops & Grain are teaming up to host, "Rally for our Rivers" in support of the Clean Water Act. 

In May, President Obama and the EPA restored Clean Water Act safeguards to small streams and headwaters that have been vulnerable to development and pollution for nearly 10 years. These safeguards are now under threat in Congress, so Austin is having a "float-in" on Lady Bird Lake to show solidarity with the Clean Water Act. Anyone who wants to participate should bring their canoe, kayak, paddle board, or inner tube to the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge and be prepared to float for clean rivers. More info>>

 

[Rainwater Class]Saturday, July 11th at 2pm TreeHouse is hosting a rainwater harvesting class at its store on South Lamar. Attendees will learn how to collect rainwater at their own homes and how to handle potential issues that could arise with a rainwater harvesting system. More info>>
 


There is a bouldering outing on Sunday.[Rock Climbing] Sunday, July 12th at 10am the Sierra Club is hosting a bouldering outing at Bull Creek District Park. All skill levels are welcome to participate. Chalk and a crash pad will be provided, but climbers will have to bring their own climbing shoes. Anyone interested in soaking up some adventure in Austin's outdoors should attend, but please RSVP in advance. More info>>

 


A speaker from the Climate Reality Project will be at the next Sierra Club meeting.[Climate Talk] Tuesday, July 14th at 6pm the Sierra Club is having its monthly meeting at Scholz Garten. The guest speaker will be Stephen Webster of the Climate Reality Project, an organization created by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to educate and train environmental activists on the front lines of the climate crisis. In his presentation, Webster will talk about the latest developments in the fight against climate change and suggest ways that activists can motivate positive change at the local level. Compost Pedallers CEO Dustin Fedako will be speaking at this month's Green Drinks Happy Hour.[Happy Hour] Wednesday, July 15th from 6pm to 8pm Net Impact Austin is hosting its monthly Green Drinks Happy Hour at the Livestrong Foundation on East 6th Street. The special guest for the evening will be Dustin Fedako, founder and CEO of Compost Pedallers, who will be speaking about the history and mission of his mobile composting business. There will even be free beer, courtesy of Save the World Brewing. More info>>
 


[Hike] Thursday, July 16th at 9am the Save Our Springs Alliance is hosting a two hour hike and educational swim/snorkel at the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Hikers will learn about the ecology of Barton Creek and should bring their own swimming clothes, hiking shoes, and water. Goggles and snorkels will be provided. Anyone wishing to participate should meet at the Twin Falls trailhead. More info>>
 


Next week's Nature Night theme is fire.[Nature Night] Thursday, July 16th from 6pm to 9pm the Nature Nights series continues at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. This week's theme is fire. Kids will learn all about wildfires and prescribed burns, and will even get to see some real firefighting equipment. The entire event is free and designed for children and their families to enjoy. More info>>
