Students will get their hands dirty learning all about what it takes to maintain a fall garden in Central Texas. Free child care can even be arranged upon request. [Launch Party] Monday, August 24th from 4pm to 9pm the U.S. Green Building Council's Central Texas – Balcones Chapter is hosting the SITES Soiree at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The event is a launch party for the SITES v2 Rating System, a comprehensive program and toolkit for developing sustainable landscapes. Attendees will be able to meet national and local sustainability leaders while touring the SITES certified Family Garden at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. More info>>
[Discussion] Monday, August 24th from 7pm to 8:30pm a group of Austinites are gathering at the Twin Oaks Library to discuss the Pope's recently released encyclical on climate change. The group will be talking about how the encyclical relates to Austin and the United States at large. Anyone interested in attending should try and read the encyclical beforehand. More info>>
[Sustainable Landscaping]Tuesday, August 25th from 9am to 4pm the City of Austin is hosting a professional firewise landscaping class at City Hall. Firewise landscaping techniques are designed to reduce potential fire fuel sources and help to mitigate the risk of wildfire. Tickets must be purchased by Friday, August 21st at noon. More info>>
[Happy Hour] Tuesday, August 25th from 5:30pm to 8pm Solar Austin is having its monthly happy hour at Scholz Garten. The guest speaker will be Charlie Hemmeline, executive director of the Texas Solar Power Association. He'll be providing an overview of this past legislative session, explaining how it affected clean energy, and giving some perspective on what might be in store for the future. [Smart City Meetup]Tuesday, August 25th from5:30pm to 7:30pm Austin CityUP is hosting the Smart Cities Meetup at City Hall. Austin CityUP is a new city-wide consortium that engages in smart city projects to advance Austin through digital technologies, data collection, analytics and modeling. [Cooking Class] Thursday, August 27th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm the Sustainable Food Center is hosting an Essential Knife Skills class at their headquarters on East 17th Street. Students will learn how to slice, dice, chop and chiffonade like a pro. They'll also go home with a ready-to-use vegetable bounty, as well as recipes that incorporate all of those freshly cut veggies. Advance registration is requested. More info>>
