23 Sep Dropping Gluten Austin Triathlete Overcame Fatigue Won Austin Marathon, Placed 2nd in Hawaii Ironman
Desiree Ficker, Owner of Bounce Bakery will give gluten free baking tips and tastes as they demonstrate healthy cooking at the 13th Annual Renewable Energy Roundup & Green Living Fair (The Roundup).
In 2005 Ficker was training and competing as a professional long course triathlete. She was traveling all over the world to Ironman and half Ironman competitions. However stomach issues she had been experiencing for years worsened and she slowly became sicker, more fatigued and was having trouble in her races. After much trial and error she was diagnosed with celiac disease and forced to eliminate all gluten from her diet. After a few short months she was healthier than ever and had her best year of competition, finishing second in the 2006 Hawaii Ironman. She also went on to place 10th in the New York City marathon in 2009 and to win the Austin marathon in 2011.
Now a new mother, business owner and triathlete, Desiree Ficker will speak at The Roundup at Market Square, 126 West Main St. in Fredericksburg, Sat., Sept. 28th at 10 AM.
“Eliminating gluten from my diet has completely changed my quality of life and my career as a professional athlete. I would like to provide helpful information for people who are new to gluten free diets and those looking to expand their gluten free cooking repertoire. I will give them the Bounce Bakery inside scoop with tips for baking gluten free.” Desiree Ficker, Owner Bounce Bakery & Triathlete
