COUNCIL MEMBERS CALL FOR GREATER SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY GARDENS
AND URBAN FARMS
Austin Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez and Council Members Chris Riley and Laura Morrison today announced a resolution aimed at promoting urban farms and community gardens.
The resolution, passed unanimously by the Austin City Council, will make it easier for community gardens and urban farms to find appropriate lands, implement sustainability strategies, manage pest populations, and protect water quality.
“We created a Sustainable Food Policy Board to enhance local production of quality food and its accessibility to residents in Austin ,” Mayor Pro Tem Martinez said. “This resolution should empower those interested in growing that food right here in Austin and make it easier for them to operate their gardens and farms in an environmentally friendly way.”
“Urban farms and community gardens make great neighbors,” said Council Member Laura Morrison. “They provide ideal gathering places and opportunities for neighbors to work together to improve their neighborhood, and I want to do all I can to encourage their work.”
“This resolution should, in the long run, really help our local economy and environment,” said Council Member Chris Riley. “The farms and gardens can create lots of local jobs and educational opportunities, and they provide access to nutritious foods produced with less carbon resources than those shipped in from other regions, which supports our Climate Protection and Zero Waste initiatives.”
The City Manager will present a plan to the City Council for sustainable urban agriculture and community gardens by March.
